Cook Mode and timers

In short: Cook Mode shows one step at a time. Timers ring like an alarm on iOS 26.1 and later, even on silent.

What is Cook Mode?

Cook Mode shows one step at a time in large type you can read across the counter. Times in the text become timers, and you can move through steps by voice. About Cook Mode.

How do I start Cook Mode?

Open a recipe and tap Cook. Prop the phone where you can see it. Tap the mic when your hands are busy.

Can I control Cook Mode with my voice?

Yes. Tap the mic, then say next, back, repeat, or set a timer. Example: with flour on your hands, say "next".

Does Saucepan record my voice?

No. Audio is not recorded or sent to us. Apple's speech recognition runs on your device when your device supports it. On older devices, Apple may process the audio on its servers under Apple's privacy policy.

How do timers work in Cook Mode?

Times in the recipe text become tap-to-start timers. "Simmer for 10 minutes" gives you a timer you start with one tap. Each timer is labeled from its step, so you know which is which.

Do timers ring if my phone is on silent?

Yes, on iOS 26.1 and later. Saucepan timers use the system alarm, so they ring like the Clock app, even on silent and with the phone locked. About timers.

What happens on an older version of iOS?

On versions before iOS 26.1, timers alert by notification. The silent switch can mute that sound.

Can I run more than one timer at once?

Yes. Tap each time in the recipe to start a timer for it. Saucepan runs them together and rings each one. Set several timers.

Can I see my timer when the phone is locked?

Yes. A Live Activity shows the countdown and the step you are on, on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. You can go to the next step, add a minute or pause from there. About Live Activities.

Do I need to allow notifications?

Yes. Allow notifications for Saucepan when asked, so a timer can ring while the app is in the background. You can check this in Settings, then Notifications, then Saucepan.

What happens when I finish cooking?

Cook Mode shows a finish screen when you are done, so you can log the cook.

How do I change the servings?

Open the recipe, change the servings, and the amounts update. Use Make It Mine to keep your scaled version. Cook times do not always scale, so check the dish as it cooks. Try the free recipe scaler.
