AI features
In short: AI runs on your phone first. The cloud is used only when your phone cannot do the work.
Where does Saucepan use AI?
Saucepan uses AI to read recipes, estimate nutrition, suggest swaps, answer questions in Ask, and polish a dish photo you choose. It runs on your device first. The cloud is used only when your device cannot do the work.
Does Saucepan use Apple Intelligence?
Yes. On supported iPhones, Apple's on-device models read the recipe text, and the text stays on your device. Some Apple Intelligence requests may use Apple's Private Cloud Compute, which Apple runs.
When does Saucepan use cloud AI to read a recipe?
Only when Apple Intelligence cannot read it: on phones without Apple Intelligence, in languages it does not read yet, or when it finds no recipe. It also runs when you tap Read Again in the Cloud. With Saucepan+, every recipe is read in the cloud first.
What if the AI reads a recipe wrong?
Check the recipe before you save it, and fix anything that looks off. You can tap Read Again in the Cloud, or report the problem on the recipe. Imports are a draft you can edit.
What is Ask?
Ask answers a cooking question you type, using your recipes and recipes other people have published. It needs your OK the first time. Free accounts get a limited number of questions, and Saucepan+ removes the limit. The app shows how many you have left.
How accurate are the nutrition numbers?
They are estimates from an AI model, not medical advice, and they can be wrong. This needs an account and cloud reading turned on in Settings. About nutrition and swaps.
What is a lighter version of a recipe?
Saucepan can write a lighter version of a saved recipe, with before and after numbers. Tap Save as My Version to keep it as your own.
What does Polish photo do?
It fixes the light and color of a dish photo you added. The model is told not to add, remove or restyle food. You see the original and the polished version side by side, and nothing changes unless you keep it. It runs only when you tap Polish.
What is Make It Mine?
Make It Mine saves your own version of a recipe. Change the servings, swap an ingredient, or adjust the steps, and the credit to the original stays attached. Your version sits next to the original. Unlimited Make It Mine is part of Saucepan+. About Make It Mine.
Which company runs the AI?
Our server passes text to OpenRouter, which routes it to an AI model run by independent hosts or Google. The Privacy Policy names the current models and says it will be updated if they change. Our server does not store the text. Read the Privacy Policy for the current list.
Can I use Saucepan in ChatGPT or Claude?
Yes. Saucepan has a connector for ChatGPT, Claude and Claude Code, so you can ask in plain words. It can search Saucepan's recipe collection, save recipes, see what you can make, add to your grocery list and put dinners on your plan. The connector is free. About the connector.
What can a connected AI assistant not do?
A connected assistant works as you, with limits. The Privacy Policy says it cannot delete anything, change your account or post publicly. You can disconnect it in the app at Profile, then ChatGPT and Claude. See the Privacy Policy for the full list.
