Receipts and Pantry

In short: Scan your receipt after you shop. The photo stays on your phone, and Saucepan fills your Pantry.

What is the receipt scan?

You scan your grocery receipt after you shop, and Saucepan adds the food to your Pantry. It then tells you what to use first and which of your saved recipes you can cook. How it works.

How do I scan a receipt?

Tap Scan receipt in Pantry, next to your grocery list. Take a photo or pick one from your library, check the list, and tap Done. Tap a row to remove an item first. Nothing is added until you tap Done.

Does my receipt photo leave my phone?

No. The text is read on your device. If a line is too short to recognize, such as ORG BBY SPNCH, only the text of that one line may be sent to our AI service to spell it out. The image, the store and the totals are never sent.

What if the scan gets an item wrong?

Tap the row to remove it before you save. Nothing is added to your Pantry until you tap Done.

Does it add paper towels and other non-food items?

No. Non-food lines, such as paper towels, are left out.

Does it work with online grocery orders?

Yes. A screenshot of a grocery order, such as Instacart or Amazon Fresh, reads the same way as a receipt.

Can it read spice jars or a pantry shelf?

Yes. It reads any printed labels in the photo. One photo of a shelf can replace typing a list. Example: photograph your spice rack, and the jars you own go into your Pantry.

Do I have to scan receipts?

No. You can type or say what you have, and What Can I Make? works from that list too. The scan just saves you the typing. About What Can I Make?

What is the Pantry?

Your Pantry is the list of food you have at home. Receipt scans fill it, and What Can I Make? reads it. Saucepan guesses how fresh each item is, so it can tell you what to use first. See the Pantry.

How does Saucepan know what to use first?

It uses freshness guesses based on each item's shelf life and when you added it. It is honest about what it does not know. If it is not sure you still have something, it says "check the drawer" instead of guessing.

Is my Pantry shared with my household?

Yes, if you are in a Cook Together household. Your Pantry joins the household's, like the grocery list. If you are signed in, your Pantry syncs to our servers; without an account it stays on your device.

Is the receipt scan free?

Receipt scan is part of the Pantry. The pricing page lists what each plan includes and any limits, so check it for the current details.
