Pescatarian recipes, meat flagged, fish welcome
Set pescatarian once. Saucepan keeps fish, seafood, dairy and eggs, and flags meat, poultry and the stock that hides them.
Saucepan is a cooking app. A flag is a guide, not a guarantee, and it is not medical or religious advice. Always check labels, and ask your doctor, dietitian or religious authority when it matters.
What the pescatarian filter does
Set it once, for everyone you cook for. Explore and your own recipes then show what fits, flag the ingredient that does not, and suggest a swap.
What Saucepan flags
- Beef, lamb, pork and other red meat.
- Chicken, turkey and other poultry.
- Gelatin, and stock or fat made from meat, such as lard.
Where it cannot know
- Meat-based stock, fat or flavouring in a packaged ingredient that the recipe does not name.
- Fish allergies. Pescatarian allows fish. If you are allergic, set fish as an allergen too.
- Whether fish was sourced the way you prefer. Saucepan does not track sustainability.
In short. Pescatarian in Saucepan allows fish, shellfish, dairy, eggs and honey. It flags meat, poultry and gelatin.
Common pescatarian swaps
What to use instead, and how to use it.
Instead of Chicken
Cod, haddock or other firm white fish
Cook it for much less time. Fish is done when it flakes, usually in minutes, not tens of minutes.
Instead of Beef stock
Fish stock, vegetable stock or dashi
Dashi is made with kelp and bonito flakes, which are fish. It adds depth fast.
Instead of Bacon
Smoked salmon or smoked mackerel
Add smoked fish at the end so it stays tender.
Instead of Ground beef
Chopped prawns, salmon or lentils
Salmon patties hold together well with an egg and breadcrumbs.
Instead of Gelatin
Agar-agar
Agar sets firmer. It needs far less than gelatin and must be boiled to set, so follow the pack.
Instead of Lard
Butter or olive oil
Butter works for pastry, oil for frying.

Questions
Are eggs and dairy allowed?
Yes. Pescatarian allows eggs, dairy and honey. Flag them separately with dairy-free, egg-free or vegan if you avoid them.
Is gelatin flagged?
Yes. Most gelatin comes from pork or beef, so it is flagged.
Can Saucepan flag a shellfish allergy?
Yes. Shellfish and molluscs are separate allergens in Saucepan, and allergy flags are free.
