No-pork recipes, with bacon, lard and gelatin flagged
Set no pork once. Saucepan flags pork in every form, marks gelatin as “check”, and suggests what to cook instead.
Saucepan is a cooking app. A flag is a guide, not a guarantee, and it is not medical or religious advice. Always check labels, and ask your doctor, dietitian or religious authority when it matters.
What the no pork filter does
Set it once, for everyone you cook for. Explore and your own recipes then show what fits, flag the ingredient that does not, and suggest a swap.
What Saucepan flags
- Pork, bacon, ham, prosciutto, pancetta, pork sausage and chorizo.
- Lard.
- Gelatin is marked “check”, because it is often pork-derived.
Where it cannot know
- Pork inside a packaged ingredient. Some stock cubes, sausages, pastries and sweets use pork fat or gelatin.
- Sausages and stocks when the recipe does not say what they are made from.
- Shared grills and fryers at restaurants. Saucepan covers recipes, not menus.
In short. This is for cooking choices of any kind, whether religious, cultural, medical or personal. For halal or kosher, use those filters too.
Common no pork swaps
What to use instead, and how to use it.
Instead of Bacon
Turkey bacon, beef bacon or smoked mushrooms
Smoked paprika gives the smoky edge. Turkey bacon dries out faster, so cook it gently.
Instead of Pancetta or guanciale
Smoked beef or smoked turkey, cut small
Render the fat with a little olive oil to bring back the richness.
Instead of Pork sausage
Chicken, lamb or beef sausage
Add fennel seed and chilli flakes to chicken sausage meat.
Instead of Ground pork
Ground chicken, turkey or beef
Add a spoonful of oil for lean meats. They dry out faster.
Instead of Lard
Butter, oil or beef tallow
Butter suits pastry. Tallow suits frying.
Instead of Gelatin
Agar-agar or beef gelatin
Beef gelatin is labelled. Agar is plant-based and sets firmer.
Instead of Ham
Roast turkey, chicken or smoked salmon
Slice thin for sandwiches and salads.
Does this ingredient fit?
Type an ingredient and pick a diet. This is a quick guide built from Saucepan’s own ingredient table. It runs on your device.
Pick a starting point or type your own. Sauces and packaged foods vary, so the answer is a guide.
Questions
Is gelatin flagged?
It is marked “check”. Most gelatin is pork-derived, but beef and fish gelatin exist. Read the label.
Are sausages flagged?
Sausage that is clearly pork is flagged. A recipe that only says “sausage” is marked “check”, since it could be anything.
Does this cover halal?
No pork is part of halal and kosher, but those diets have more rules. Use those filters as well.
