Vegan recipes, checked ingredient by ingredient
Set vegan once. Saucepan checks every ingredient, shows what fits, flags the one that does not, and suggests a swap.
Saucepan is a cooking app. A flag is a guide, not a guarantee, and it is not medical or religious advice. Always check labels, and ask your doctor, dietitian or religious authority when it matters.
What the vegan filter does
Set it once, for everyone you cook for. Explore and your own recipes then show what fits, flag the ingredient that does not, and suggest a swap.
What Saucepan flags
- Milk, eggs, fish, shellfish and molluscs.
- Meat, pork and poultry, including bacon, lard and stock.
- Honey, gelatin, insect-derived colour (carmine) and cheeses made with animal rennet.
Where it cannot know
- Hidden animal ingredients inside packaged foods. Some breads, wines, sugars and sauces use animal products in processing or are not listed in full.
- Refining and fining. Some white sugar is filtered with bone char and some wine is fined with fish or milk proteins. Neither shows on an ingredient list.
- A recipe that only says “stock” or “cheese”. Saucepan treats vague words as a reason to check, not as a pass.
In short. If a recipe fits vegan in Saucepan, it means no ingredient in its list is known to come from an animal. It does not cover how a packaged ingredient was made.
Common vegan swaps
What to use instead, and how to use it.
Instead of Butter
Olive oil, or a block vegan butter
Use oil in savoury cooking. For baking, use a block vegan butter, not a soft spread, which has more water.
Instead of Milk
Soy or oat milk
Soy milk is closest in protein. Unsweetened versions keep savoury dishes from tasting sweet.
Instead of Egg (as a binder)
Ground flax and water
One tablespoon ground flax plus three tablespoons water per egg, rested five minutes. Works in muffins and burgers, not in meringue.
Instead of Egg whites (whipped)
Aquafaba
The liquid from a tin of chickpeas whips like egg white. Use about three tablespoons per egg white.
Instead of Honey
Maple syrup or agave
Swap one for one. Maple is thinner, so baked goods may brown a little faster.
Instead of Parmesan
Nutritional yeast
A savoury, cheesy sprinkle. Add salt separately, since it has little.
Instead of Chicken or beef stock
Vegetable stock or mushroom stock
Check that a stock cube has no milk or meat extract.
Instead of Gelatin
Agar-agar
Agar sets firmer and at room temperature. It needs far less than gelatin and must be boiled to set, so follow the pack.
Does this ingredient fit?

Pick a starting point or type your own. Sauces and packaged foods vary, so the answer is a guide.
Questions
Does Saucepan treat honey as vegan?
No. For a vegan filter, honey is flagged. For a vegetarian filter it is allowed.
Can Saucepan tell if a cheese is vegan?
Only from the words in the recipe. “Cheddar” is flagged as dairy. A recipe that names a plant-based cheese is not flagged. Check the label on any cheese substitute.
What about sugar and wine?
Some white sugar and some wine are processed with animal products, and the label usually does not say. Saucepan cannot see that. If it matters to you, look for products labelled vegan.
Does it work on my own recipes?
Yes. Saucepan checks the recipes you save as well as the ones in Explore, and shows which ingredient breaks the diet.
