Gluten-free recipes, with the sneaky sources flagged
Set gluten-free once. Saucepan flags wheat, barley, rye and the sauces and mixes that hide them, and suggests a swap.
Saucepan is a cooking app. A flag is a guide, not a guarantee, and it is not medical or religious advice. Always check labels, and ask your doctor, dietitian or religious authority when it matters.
What the gluten-free filter does
Set it once, for everyone you cook for. Explore and your own recipes then show what fits, flag the ingredient that does not, and suggest a swap.
What Saucepan flags
- Wheat, barley and rye, and anything made from them: flour, bread, pasta, couscous, bulgur, semolina, seitan.
- Sauces and ingredients that often contain wheat, such as soy sauce, are flagged or marked “check”.
- Gluten is one of the allergens in Saucepan, and allergy flags are free.
Where it cannot know
- Cross-contact. Oats, spices and flours can pick up gluten in the field or the factory. A recipe cannot show that.
- “May contain” warnings and shared-equipment statements on packaged food.
- How strict you need to be. For coeliac disease, a very small amount matters, so read every label.
In short. This is a guide for planning, not medical advice. If you have coeliac disease, check labels on every packaged ingredient.
Common gluten-free swaps
What to use instead, and how to use it.
Instead of Soy sauce
Tamari (labelled gluten-free)
Most tamari is wheat-free, but not all. Check for “gluten-free” on the label.
Instead of Wheat pasta
Rice, corn or chickpea pasta
Cook it a minute less than the pack says and rinse only if it will be eaten cold.
Instead of Breadcrumbs
Crushed cornflakes, gluten-free breadcrumbs or ground almonds
Ground almonds are fine for gluten-free but not for nut allergies.
Instead of Flour as a thickener
Cornflour or arrowroot
Use about half as much. Mix with cold water first.
Instead of Flour in baking
A gluten-free plain flour blend
Choose a blend with xanthan gum in it, or add about half a teaspoon per cup of flour.
Instead of Couscous or bulgur
Quinoa, rice or millet
Quinoa is a seed. Rinse it first to remove bitterness.
Instead of Flour tortillas
Corn tortillas
Check the label. Some corn tortillas contain wheat flour.
Does this ingredient fit?
Type an ingredient and pick a diet. This is a quick guide built from Saucepan’s own ingredient table. It runs on your device.
Pick a starting point or type your own. Sauces and packaged foods vary, so the answer is a guide.
Questions
Are oats gluten-free?
Oats do not contain wheat gluten but are often contaminated in processing. Saucepan marks them “check”. Choose oats labelled gluten-free.
Does Saucepan catch soy sauce?
Yes. Standard soy sauce contains wheat, so it is flagged. Tamari is often gluten-free, but check the label.
Is this safe for coeliac disease?
It is a planning guide, not a medical tool. It cannot see cross-contact or “may contain” warnings. Always check labels and follow your doctor’s advice.
Is the gluten flag free?
Yes. Allergy flags are free.
