Tips

  • Use the price on the shelf tag and the size on the package: $4.50 for 1 lb, or $3 for 12 eggs.
  • If a recipe says "1 cup flour" and the package is in pounds, enter 125 g of flour in the used column. The cups to grams tool has the weights.
  • Count salt, oil and spices too. Each is small, together they are not.

How it is calculated

  • Ingredient cost = package price × (amount used ÷ package size). Same kind of unit: weight, volume or count.
  • Cost per serving = total cost ÷ servings.

Worked example

Butter at $4.50 per lb, 8 oz used: $2.25. A $3 dozen eggs, 2 used: $0.50. With 4 servings, each costs $0.69.

Questions

How do I work out the cost per serving?

Add up what the recipe uses of each ingredient, priced from the package, then divide by the servings.

Why can I not mix weight and volume?

A cup does not have one weight: a cup of flour and a cup of honey differ. If your package is in pounds and the recipe is in cups, enter the recipe amount in ounces or grams. Saucepan's cups to grams tool will help.

What about pantry items like salt and oil?

Price them as you would any ingredient. They are small, but they add up.

Does this include tax or waste?

No. It is the price you enter, for the amount you use. Add a small extra for trimmings if you like.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

Can I use a different currency?

Yes. The calculator does not use a currency sign; use any.
