Where to get the totals

Add up each ingredient's label for the amount you use. USDA FoodData Central lists nutrients per 100 g for thousands of foods. The Daily Value column compares one serving with the FDA's reference amounts for a 2,000 calorie diet.

How it is calculated

  • Per serving = recipe total ÷ servings.
  • % Daily Value = amount per serving ÷ FDA Daily Value × 100.
  • Calories from macros = 4 × protein (g) + 4 × carbohydrate (g) + 9 × fat (g).

Worked example

A recipe with 2,400 calories and 8 servings: 300 calories a serving. 24 g of fat in 8 servings is 3 g a serving, 4% of the Daily Value.

Questions

How do I get the totals for a recipe?

Add up the label values for each ingredient. Many food databases, including USDA FoodData Central, list nutrients per 100 g.

What are Daily Values?

The FDA reference amounts used on Nutrition Facts labels. They are based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

Why does my calorie total not match the macros?

Labels round numbers, and fiber, alcohol and sugar alcohols have other energy factors. A small difference is normal. A big one means a number was entered wrong.

Is this label-ready?

No. This does not apply FDA rounding rules. Use it for your own planning.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything stays in your browser.

Is this medical advice?

No. For a medical diet, ask a registered dietitian.
